Innate Immunity in Viral Infection Symposium

To defend ourselves against a diverse range of viral pathogens, our bodies are equipped with cells, pathways, and molecules that mediate an effective antiviral response. The innate immune response is the first line of defense against pathogens and is rapidly activated upon viral infection, days before the adaptive immune response kicks in.

It is important to understand the exact molecular mechanisms underlying antiviral defense mechanisms of the innate immune system, how these are exploited by viruses, and how these are sometimes deregulated in human disease. Insight into such molecular mechanisms will eventually help to pinpoint novel therapeutic targets to treat or prevent infectious diseases.

This Symposium will bring together experts in the field of innate immunity, viral infection, molecular biology, and cell biology to discuss the latest advancements in the field of antiviral immunity and how the same mechanisms that protect us from viral infections can also drive disease when they are inappropriately activated or deregulated by viruses. The meeting will have an emphasis on the molecular mechanisms underlying the sensing and response to viral nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). The meeting aims to bring together a diverse group of researchers and to stimulate the exchange of new, exciting ideas.
